Interview with Bekka Scott, author. 7/23/24                      by Sophia Andrade

Q. Tell me about your author journey, what made you want to write? Well, it took 20+ years to realize my dream of being a published author. It took a lot of struggle, tears and fear fighting to get that story out of me.  It's not my finest work but it is genuinely me.  My unrepentant voice for the victims, especially the two that this story was about.  This was the "have to" book that made me realize that this is what I am meant to do. Once it was finished, all the stories that had built up in my head started to flow out through my fingers, so I started working on other things.

Q. Tell me about your background, why do you write such triggering stories?  I lost my mother when I was very young so I spent a lot of time with cousins, telling their story was important to them and between the three of us, we outlined the story and brought it to life.  I have experienced a lot of the wild lifestyle, but not as traumatic as I write.  I feel like the victims who I write about deserve a strong voice that they can use in defending themselves.  It's not their fault, but some aren't able to believe that, or accept it at times.  I want to tell those stories so people understand that there is true evil in the world, and the simple fact that someone was traumatized does not make them less than someone who hasn't experienced that kind of life.   We are all deserving of good things.

Q. What genres do you like to write?  Oh that's a dangerous and slippery slope. I like to mix up the genres, for example, I am working on a couple of stories that are thriller-mystery-romance, and I have a couple that are women's lit too.  I try not to be the same as everyone else, I write from my heart and I let the story guide me. So, I guess the answer to this question is, all of them.

Q. Where do your story inspirations come from? Ha, that's an interesting one,  I would say from everywhere.  I can meet someone at my 9-5 job and think, wow, they'd make a great character for a book.  I can be on the phone with someone and they will tell me their name and immediately my brain tries to create what they look like, and an alternate life for them.  I saw a coffee mug one time that said "Don't annoy the writer, she will put you in her book and kill you." and that is so me!

Q What else do you do besides write?  How much time do you have? I crochet, knit, cross stitch (fabric and plastic canvas), I paint, I make cups, I draw, I sing with the radio (not very well but that doesn't stop me!) I like to hang out with my kids, my grandmonsters and my close friends.  I also ride as a passenger with my husband on his Harley.  I don't like to sit still, it causes me to think and I need to get some of the stories in  my head written down before I start others.  As of today, I have 31 books in various stages of completion.  Some may merge together and some may just be for me, but they're there!
